Poe and Life Science

How did Poe use both literal and symbolic examples of life in his work?

To answer this question, we have used information from Poe's short story "The Fall of the House of Usher." We compare the state of decay of the title character's house with the sickly and dying state of its inhabitants.

How did Poe’s views on Life Sciences coincide with and deviate from the modern views of it in his day?

To answer this question, we have used information from Poe's short story "The Man That Was Used Up" and a secondary source called Mesmerists, Monsters, and Machines: Science Fiction and the Cultures of Science in the Nineteenth Century by Martin Willis. We show how Poe drew upon the influences of his day in writing "The Man That Was Used Up."
